Stillwater Montessori School is an independent, non-sectarian school that offers a rich curriculum based in the Montessori Method.
Now in its 31st year, SMS has both a Primary program (3- 6 yrs) and an Elementary program (6 to 11 yrs). Both programs are run by certified Montessori teachers and are located in a large Victorian house with attached barn that has been renovated into classroom space and office space. In addition to the core curriculum, special instructional programs at SMS include Spanish, Music, Violin, Art, and Movement. After school programs include an Environmental Club and Chess Club, both of which are open to the community.
Stillwater Montessori School has students from many different nationalities and religious backgrounds because of the nearby University of Maine and its international community. Our school’s diverse student body and Montessori base means that cultural studies and celebrations are an important aspect of the curriculum. Stillwater Montessori School has a strong environmental curriculum and philosophy and actively participates in Project Learning Tree, Project Wild, Project Feederwatch, Wild School sites, Penobscot Riverkeepers and Project Wild Aquatic.
Stillwater Montessori School is located nine miles north of Bangor, ME off exit 193 at 1024 Stillwater Avenue in Old Town, ME. Stillwater Montessori School is conveniently located 1 mile from the University of Maine in Orono.
